When you first decide to become a freelancer, it can be scary. Going from the world of employment to being your own boss is quite a big leap.
So much so, that you may find yourself mulling it over for quite some time before you actually do it. This is also the reason why lots of people will start to build up their freelance work on the side of their full-time job, or their studies.
Because it’s always good to know that you’re able to make something work before you dive in too deep.
But whether you’re freelancing full-time right off the bat, looking to build things up on the side, or you’ve been freelancing for a few months, you’ll want to make sure that you’re doing the best job that you can.
This is where the idea of turning to (and having) the best possible tools, comes in. It’s easy to believe that you are meant to be able to do this all on your own. That it’s you, your creativity, and your laptop. But in reality, that’s very rarely the case. Because in order to do a great job, to be efficient, and to manage the many tasks you have at hand (and there are a ton!), you need help. Sometimes, it’ll be from a service or kind of software, sometimes it will be from a person – either way, you need it. So let’s run through the key essentials that will help you to make it as a freelancer.
1. A Routine
To start with, you need a routine. A lot of people will go freelance because they want the freedom and flexibility. However, if you want to be productive, grow as a freelancer, and do a good job, you need to have set working hours. This will allow you to get the necessary work done, in the time that you have.
2. A Work Space
Next up, you may find that you need to get a space together to work from. Yes, you can definitely work from anywhere you like – and this is one of the perks of being freelance – but it should be motivating. You will want to be sure that you can be inspired and feel productive by your work space. So if you have the room, create a home office. Make sure that it’s a motivating space that you can get a lot of work done in.
3. An Organizational System
Next up, you’re going to want to make sure that you’re as organized as possible. If you don’t have a system for staying organized and doing your work, you may struggle to stay on top of everything. At the same time, if you find that you are doing the same tasks over and over, creating a process for doing it could make things more efficient.
4. Project Management
The next thing that you might want to work out is how you’re going to manage projects efficiently. Because you have to be in control of what you’ve got going on and when. It can be handy for you to allow clients or other collaborators into the program. But if you’re doing this, you may need ProofID user access management to keep it secure. But you will find that it’s easier to stay on top of your projects with the right management software in place.
You may also want to work with key experts to help you do a better job. This could be working with a graphic designer or a translator, or even IT experts, marketing consultants, or a virtual assistant to improve the quality of your work.
6. Specialist Programs
You may know that you need to be using something like Microsoft Word or Google Docs to write your work, but you should also know that won’t be the only program you use. Ideally, you’ll be able to turn to a range of software programs that help you to manage your time better, to be more productive, and to do a better job too. So definitely look into the different programs that might be able to make your day easier.
7. A Plan
And finally, do not forget about having a plan. It’s really important that you know exactly how you plan to grow your freelance business and where you want to take it. So have an idea in your mind of what you want to do, and then, be sure to work out an actionable plan of how you’re going to make that happen. Ideally, you should know what marketing tactics you want to use, then you can put them in motion, in order to grow.
