There is so much talk out there about how our overconsumption is affecting the planet or about the effects of fast-fashion on those living in developing countries.
Though fast-fashion is an incredibly important issue, I also believe we shouldn’t shame people for making informed choices about buying. You shouldn’t feel guilty for treating yourself to an occasional new item of clothing.
The thing is, we do need to live, and treating ourselves occasionally to a well-informed purchase is an important part of our self-care.
Read on to find out why self-care is so important and why it is OK to treat yourself every now and again.
1. Enhanced self-esteem
Buying that dress that looks amazing on you or those jeans that hug you in all the right places can really give an incredible boost to your self-esteem.
Defined as how you see our own worth, self-esteem is incredibly important when it comes to your success and motivation to achieve. Try to shop with ethical brands so that you can boost your self-esteem and treat yourself without feeling guilty.
2. Be more healthy
Practising self-care can actually make you healthier. There’s nothing quite like finding that perfect piece while you are out on a shopping trip. It releases so many endorphins into your body, so much so, that it can actually help us fight off simple illnesses such as colds or upset stomachs. Plus, shopping is exercise, right? Well, you certainly do a lot of walking during a shopping trip.
3. Increase disease resistance
Shopping is an act of self-care. The act of choosing something that you love and purchasing it for yourself demonstrates an appreciation of yourself that can have positive effects on the body.
Evidence shows that practising self-care can have a rejuvenating effect as it stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. This helps to strengthen the immune system, leading to increased disease resistance.
It is still important to make the right choices by those who can be exploited by brands looking to boost profits. There are brands out there who are leading the way in human rights, ASOS, for instance, deliver training programs to help all of their staff recognise the presence of modern slavery
4. Know yourself better
Self-care acts such as shopping can actually help you get to know yourself a little better. The act of choosing clothes that look good on you can really help you learn about yourself and what makes you happy. Understanding that can have such a positive impact on your life.
5. Be more generous
Acts of self-care such as shopping might seem selfish. However, we need to give to ourselves so that we can give freely to others. Treating yourself to a new item of clothing can give you a boost that can help give you the energy to give to others. Those who don’t look after themselves rarely have the energy to give back to others.
6. More productivity
Often, the thing that stops people shopping for their perfect items of clothing is time. They are so busy in other areas of life that they forgo this act of self-care. Learn to say no to those things in life that are not essential, so that you can make more time for yourself. Doing so will also help you become more productive in your everyday life.
As always, thanks for reading.
