Many of our lives have changed significantly over the past month or two. At the start of the year, 2020 seemed like any other.
But as the first few months passed, it became increasingly apparent that the world was beginning to face a pandemic.
The rapid spread of coronavirus across the globe, followed by countless deaths from Covid-19, has put many countries into lockdown situations, where we’re being asked to stay home to protect our health.
Of course, we need to follow this advice. But at the same time, we still need to make sure we take responsibility for our health and lead as healthy lifestyles as possible while we stay indoors.
Here are just a few different areas that you can focus on to help yourself achieve this!
Creating an Exercise Routine
We all need to exercise to some extent. In fact, the general recommendation is that the average adult gets one hundred and fifty minutes of moderate aerobic exercise, or seventy five minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise every week.
When you’re in the house, this can sound like a challenge. But on the other side of things, you’ve probably got a lot more time on your hands too. So, there’s now excuse to swerve your workouts.
Now, you can’t go to the gym anymore. They’re closed. So are sports clubs, fitness classes, personal training sessions and other means of getting exercise that you might be used to engaging with. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t exercise at all.
After all, we’re all permitted sixty minutes of exercise outside each day. If you want to get out and about, go for a walk, jog or run. Getting some fresh air can be good for you.
Just make sure to stay two meters apart from anyone else who might be out exercising at the same time. If you want to skip heading outdoors, you can still do a home workout.
There are so many tutorials online that you can follow along with for free. Alternatively, many fitness classes are holding classes online via video. You may want to invest in some home workout equipment to make things more comfortable or more challenging. Some ideas could include:
- A yoga mat
- A pilates bar
- Handheld weights
- Resistance bands
- Foam rollers
- An exercise ball
Everyone knows that we need to eat balanced diets. We’re told this time and time again throughout our whole lives. But when it comes down to it, a surprising number of us don’t follow this advice on a day to day basis.
We’ll find ourselves being tempted by takeaways. We’ll dabble in fast food too often. We’ll stock up on junk food. This generally results in us eating way too many saturated fats, salts and sugars – definitely more than is recommended for our daily diets.
Now, there are much worse things you can do to your body than eat these foods every once in a while. They’re tasty. They’re convenient. But really, they need to stay occasional.
While you’re in lockdown, avoid them altogether. There’s no point eating takeaways and having food delivered when you can cook in your own home and cut down contact with others as a result.
When cooking from home, do your utmost to follow a balanced diet. You don’t need to starve yourself. You don’t need to deny yourself of any particular food groups.
A little unsaturated fat is fine. A little sugar is fine. A little salt is fine. The key is moderation. Make sure you stick to your recommended calorie intake (this is generally 2500 calories a day for most men and 2000 calories a day for most women).

These hold their nutritional value well, but have a much longer life once you take them home. Sure, it may take a little more planning and preparation to get them right for your meals or snacks.
But at the end of the day, it’s worth it. This will ensure you don’t have to head out regularly, but can still get all of the vitamins and minerals you need!
Staying hydrated is so simple. But so many people completely fail to implement this step into their routine. All you need to do is drink around eight glasses of water a day.
This will help to keep your body hydrated and stave off the symptoms and consequences of dehydration. Remember that your body is around sixty percent water. You need to keep these levels topped up!
Monitoring Your Health
It’s a good idea to be familiar with your general state of health. Knowing your body will help you to identify changes to your health and symptoms of potential problems sooner rather than later.
Know how your skin looks. This can help you to identify rashes, spots or new moles. Know your menstrual cycle. This will help you see sooner if it changes at all.
Simple steps like this are important. If you do notice any changes or symptoms developing, you can then always reach out to your doctor over the phone who can diagnose issues and provide the right medication or treatment to put things right and set you back on the right track.
Developing a Skincare Routine
Most of us already have a skincare routine in place. But many of us are letting our skincare routine slip and need to get back up to scratch. Either that, or we just don’t have one.
Either way, now is a great time to experiment with different products and determine what works for your skin. Your routine doesn’t need to be anything fancy or complex.
You just need to determine your skin type and find the right products for it. The four main skin type groups are “normal”, dry, oily and combination.

These are just a few different areas you might want to focus on when it comes to staying fit and healthy whilst this lockdown takes place. Sure, we may need to adjust our lives a little for the time being. But it is for the greater good!
