The Mystery of Floor Three

Hello Sheffielders!

Rumor has it that one of my favorite independent shops, Bird’s Yard Sheffield, has extended its “nest of independents” to fill its third floor with wonderful new goodies for us to explore- great news! So, as any good blogger would do, I got my investigative head on and popped down to hear all about it, straight from the lovely brains behind Bird’s Yard herself, Michelle, and third floor in-house designer of LJD Womenswear, Lisa.

Ascending up the photo-clad stairs leading to the third floor (which I later found out were all vinyl photoshoots featuring Michelle’s vintage label- some having been featured in Vogue Italia itself! ), I was greeted by a gorgeous wooden interior full of stained glass lighting, ornately dressed mannequins, and rows upon rows of colorful and intriguing vintage clothing. The vintage clothes that are for sale here have all been individually hand-picked by Michelle, with many sourced from as far overseas as America under her vintage label Bird Shell. The emphasis, which I think sums up Bird’s Yard in its entirety, is clearly on quality, one-off pieces. You’ll find no “vintage style” pieces posing as the real thing here, nor any “vintage remakes” (a pet peeve of mine… nothing is ever improved with an elasticated waist!). Some of the pieces are available to hire, a nice addition for those who love to save money, or those who get bored of their wardrobes just a little too easily!

The remaining 1/3 of the floor is taken up by designer Lisa’s label, Lisa Jayne Dann Womenswear, which adorns the fitting tagline of “stylish occasion wear”. When I asked Lisa about the inspiration behind starting the label 15 years ago, she explained to me that it started out, quite simply, with her making her own outfits to wear on nights out and finding that she was asked regularly where they came from. Since her designs were featured in the Aqua Couture store in Leeds the label has gone from strength to strength, with Lisa having an enviable career in fashion design, being described as the “Queen of Leeds Independent Fashion” as well as acquiring an impressive celebrity fan-base including Sarah Cox, Colleen Rooney, Jess Wright and Layla Flaherty. The collection in Bird’s Yard features an array of striking prints, bright colours, and beautiful backless pieces- a feature of which I am a massive fan. Below are a few photos of my favorite designs from the collection, which start from a modest £45 (which for handmade garments is so reasonable, I even had to check the label twice!)

LJD Dogtooth skater dress- £55
LJD Red sweetheart bandeau jumpsuit- £89
All available from Bird’s Yard Sheffield and direct from the LJD online store here

LJD Paisley backless top- £45
LJD Pink & nude midi dress- £65
All available from Bird’s Yard Sheffield and direct from the LJD online store here

I won’t ruin it for you by describing every single nook, cranny and item- it’s well worth a visit in your own time. Not only are the clothes pretty damn fabulous, the vintage gifts and accessories kept me entertained for a good half hour too.

I hope everyone’s been enjoying this lovely weather we’ve been having… rather out of character for Sheffield, I must say! Fingers crossed for a lovely Easter weekend, and relaxing break for those of you lucky enough to have one.

Until next time,
The Sheffielder
